한국에서 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 영국의 소프트 록 그룹 스모키는 크리스 노만의 호소력 짙은 허스키한 음색이 한국인의 취향에 부합하며 인기 상승에 한몫을 담당했던 그룹이다. 
투어 활동과 싱글 음반 발매 등에도 불구하고 밴드의 성공이 요원해 보이자 밴드 이름을 영국의 날씨에 착안해서  1973년에 밴드 이름을 스모키(Smokey)로 바꾸게 된다.

1975년  9월 22일에 두번째 앨범 'Changing All the Time'을 발표하였다. 두번째 음반에서 첫번째 싱글로 발매된 "If You Think You Know How to Love Me"가 영국 싱글 차트 3위에 오르며 히트를 하였고 여세를 몰아 유럽 각국의 차트를 빠르게 점령하며 히트를 하게 된다.

후속 곡인 싱글 "Don't Play Your Rock'n'Roll to Me"가 발매되어 성공시대를 열어갈 즈음 스모키는 밴드 이름이 소울의 대부 스모키 로빈슨(Smokey Robinson)과 같다는 이유로 인한 법적 제약으로 미국내 활동에 어려움을 겪게 되어 밴드 이름의 마지막 두철자를 ey에서 ie로 바꾸어 Smokie 라는 이름을 이때 부터 사용하게 되었으며 세번째 음반 부터는 Smokie 라는 이름으로 음반을 발표하게 된다.
